Care guide / Check the person

Check the person behind the visit.

A friendly page tells you how a service wants to sound. A public licence record answers a different question: who is allowed to provide the care?

Keep this question

Whose name can I check?

Get a name you can check

Clinician means the health professional who would assess you.

Ask for the clinician’s full name and their job, such as doctor or nurse. Ask for the state licence or other state permission that lets them provide your care.

In September 2026, a US telehealth clinician needs a licence or another lawful authority covering the state you are in when you attend the visit.

A phone call, a screen or an online exchange can be the way you receive care; that is telehealth.

Where to begin looking

A local, in-person clinic

Ask who would assess you and how they would review your goal. If you already see someone for the health problem, take the question to that visit.

A licensed telehealth service

Ask which clinician would see you in your state. Ask whether a video visit, an in-person exam or tests might be needed. Get the process in writing before paying.

Treat both routes as places to ask for an assessment. Keep “will they prescribe it?” apart from “will they look at my situation?”

Look at the record yourself

A doctor’s licence status and any public board action against that doctor can be checked in records published by state medical boards.

A record with no public discipline is not a rating of how well a doctor treats people.

The Federation of State Medical Boards has links to the state boards’ websites.

A repeatable licence check

  • Find the state board through the chapter’s source link.
  • Search the exact name and match the details with the person offered to you.
  • Read the licence status, any limits and any public actions.
  • Ask the service to explain a mismatch before going further.

If the person is not a doctor, ask where to find the official record for their job. Not finding them in a doctor search does not mean they lack permission to work.

Look up the pharmacy too

For a pharmacy’s licence, look at the record held by its state board of pharmacy.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a page linking to those searches.

Licence checks answer who the person or pharmacy is. The medicine still needs its own check.
